FAQs

What are the requirements to enroll in the Wound Management Courses?

Anyone may enroll in either course; however, only students meeting AAWM certification criteria are eligible to take the certification examinations.

What is the difference between the CWCA™ and the CWS® certification?

The (CWCA) Certified Wound Care Associate certification is a basic certification in wound management. Healthcare professionals must have a minimum of three years of clinical experience to be eligible to take the CWCA™ examination.

The (CWS) Certified Wound Care Specialist certification is an advanced certification in wound management.  Healthcare professionals with either a Bachelors, Doctoral or Master's degree in a life sciences related field and who have three (3) or more years of clinical wound care experience are eligible to take the CWS examination.

Who administers the certification examinations?

The CWS and the CWCA wound certification examinations are administered by the American Academy of Wound Management (AAWM).  The AAWM is a National inter-disciplinary certifying board for healthcare professionals involved in wound care.

Is there a separate charge for the certification examinations?

Yes. The American Academy of Wound Management (AAWM) is a separate and distinct certifying body that has obtained national accreditation for their wound certification.  This accreditation is extremely important and difficult to obtain.  One of the requirements that a certifying body must meet in order to obtain accreditation is a clear separation from any “specific” course or educational program.  This separation eliminates any potential conflict of interest between an educational offering and a certification.

The following is an informative article that explains available wound certifications and the accreditation process.
